ALERT was formed on 5th of June 2007, on the occasion of Environment Day. It is the brainchild of Vandana Chavan. It is a networking initiative targeted to sensitise, create awareness and build capacity of different interest groups and stake holders. It is an association which aims to handle important aspects of implementing good governance and participatory governance at grass root level.
ALERT wishes to bring together experts from various fields who can share their expertise with the people directly responsible in the local government for the improvements in Pune city.
Global warming, the top most issue concerning everyone across the globe, was recognized as a critical and urgent environmental problem and ALERT has been working towards its awareness, measures to curb, hazards in day-to-day life by involving everyone concerned. ALERT also seeks to establish dialogue between government, elected representatives, citizens and other stake-holder groups to implement measures for the mitigation and adaptation.
Vandana Chavan has made more than 300 presentations since 5th June 2007 and has organized events on spreading awareness about Global Warming at Colleges, voluntary organizations, corporate and at seminars attended by Mayors and elected representatives of local governments. The focus is now turned to the vulnerable poor in the society, through awareness amongst women via self help groups. She is also a member of THE CLIMATE PROJECT – INDIA which has been initiated by the Nobel Laureate Al Gore, Former Vice President of the USA.
